Jay Hernandez
Interview By: J.P. Mangalindan JPMangalindan@TheCinemaSource.com
At age 18, Jay Hernandez was a self-admitted drifter. He was taking classes at a junior community college in L.A. and living at home; he had no idea what to major in, let alone what to do with the rest of his life. So, when a talent scout approached him in an elevator one afternoon and said he had the right look and why not consider acting?, Hernandez, who had never dabbled in the performing arts before, decided to give it a shot.
Eight years later, the actor who made hearts race with Kirsten Dunst in Crazy/Beautiful, now headlines Hostel, director Eli Roths follow-up to his 2002 debut, Cabin Fever. Presented with Quentin Tarantino, Hernandez plays Paxton, a pretty typical young guy backpacking with his friends in Europe, who finds himself in a very atypical situation when he stumbles across a hostel in a Slovakian town. Quickly, he finds the setting isnt so innocent, but really a clandestine operation for rich globetrotters to satiate their sadomasochistic urges by torturing unsuspecting victims.
Believe it or not, Hernandez claims the films plot isnt as farfetched as it seems.
In some way, it's a true story, he says. It's out there. It exists. There were these sites in Thailand apparently where people I'm not sure if they volunteered went to go and get killed and then money would go to their families. And these ultra-rich businessmen from around the world or wherever, would go and kill people. That's where the inspiration came from.
Immediately, Hernandez liked the screenplay.
My agent got a hold of the script; one of them hated it and said don't do it. The other agent was like, I really like it. It could be really huge and before I read it, I thought it would be what you'd expect from the genre, but it was very different. It pushed it. I read it and loved and then I sat down with Eli. The guy's so energetic, he really sold me on it. He was telling me about all the locations he had locked down. I knew Quentin was involved too, so I put it all together and thought, I'm going to do it. It was a real departure from everything that I'd done, nice guys and those kinds of things.
Rather, Hernandezs character is an immature testosterone-fueled young guy who is changed by his experience. As Paxton sinks into a physically and psychologically-tortured nadir, hes stripped of his ego and chauvinistic tendencies.
Initially, Paxton objectifies women, talks a lot of that crap, a little bit aggressive, like a frat kid. Do you know what I mean? And I figured to break him down like that, to see and experience it, I think it was a good thing. I had no problems with it at all. In that moment of being tortured, when you're that close to death, there are so many things that go through your head.
You can't get tough at that point: you're hand-cuffed to a chair! What are you going to do? There's nothing you can do. The only thing you can do is plead.”
In fact, Hernandez admits he had an issue with Paxton, particularly his character’s evolution.
“I asked Eli, ‘Do you think the audience is going to be with him?’ because initially, Paxton's kind of a prick to women, I'm talking a lot of crack, just dong things, kind of being obnoxious and I was a little worried that the audience wouldn't want to follow me, wouldn't come along with me for the ride, so that was an issue that I had, but Eli was like, ‘Don't worry about it, you have an arc, it's all good.’
The young actor’s next project is an ambitious and solemn one. Oliver Stone’s untitled project chronicles the true story of New York Port Authority officers John McLoughlin (Nicolas Cage) and William J. Jimeno (Hernandez) and their search for survivors after the World Trade Center attack.
“I went to Port Authority and spent a lot of time down there,” he says. “I also spent a lot of time with Will Jimeno, who is what the story follows. He gave us so much information. There are so many things, not just him, but other officers that I've talked to. He just gave us so much in terms of making those moments and that experience real. As an actor, he really fed me a lot.”
Keeping in mind the fact that 9/11 was a mere four years ago or so, was it difficult for Hernandez to have people open up about the subject?
“Not really,” he says. “It seemed cathartic for people. It affected so many people so deeply. Anyone we talked to was like, 'If I can help you make this right, I'm going to do that.’”
Hernandez and company hopes to do just that.
